Musselburgh railway station was a train station in the town of Musselburgh, Scotland. It served as a stop for trains on the Musselburgh Branch line.

Before this station opened, there was another station also called Musselburgh. It opened in 1846 on the main East Coast Main Line. When the 1847 Musselburgh station began operating, the older one was renamed Inveresk railway station.

Station History

This Musselburgh station first opened its doors in 1847. It was built by the North British Railway company. The station was part of the new Musselburgh Branch line. This line crossed the River Esk to reach the town centre.

Changes in Ownership

Over the years, the railway line changed hands. In 1923, it became part of the London and North Eastern Railway. Later, in 1948, it joined the Scottish Region of British Railways. This happened when the UK's railways were taken over by the government.

Station Closure

The station stopped serving passengers in 1964. It closed completely for freight (goods) trains in 1970. Today, much of the old railway track has been turned into a road. The spot where the station once stood is now a car park.

A New Station for Musselburgh

A different Musselburgh railway station was opened in 1988. This new station was built by British Rail. However, it is located on the main East Coast Main Line. It sits on the western edge of the town, not in the town centre like the old one.
