Geography of Mustang
Mustang is located in central Navarro County, Texas. You can find it at the northeast corner where Interstate 45 and FM 739 meet.

History of Mustang
Early Days and Purpose
Mustang became an official town in 1973. The main reason it was created was to allow certain businesses to operate there. At that time, Navarro County had strict rules about what could be sold.
Two partners, William "Bill" McKie and Harold "Mack" McElhenney, led the effort to make Mustang a town. In October 1973, the town voted to allow some sales. By March 1975, residents voted to allow even more types of sales.
Population Changes
Mustang's population was 12 people in 1980. It grew to 35 people by 1990. In the mid-1990s, other towns nearby changed their rules. This meant Mustang was no longer the only place for certain businesses.
The population reached 47 people in 2000.
Changes in Ownership
In 2005, town founder Bill McKie tried to sell Mustang to Tommy Sinclair. However, the sale was not completed. After Mr. McKie passed away, his wife, Marsha, continued the legal process.
Over the next few years, there were many disagreements about who owned the town. This led to financial problems for Mustang. For example, in 2006, the nearby city of Angus threatened to stop water service because of an unpaid bill. Mrs. McKie paid the bill herself to keep the water on.
In 2007, Tommy Sinclair gained control of Mustang. He made changes to the town's leadership. This led to more disagreements and even two separate elections for town council in May 2008.
Mark Cuban's Purchase
In December 2021, news reports said that billionaire Mark Cuban bought the entire town of Mustang. He paid about $2 million for it. Before this, there was an attempt to sell the town for $4 million, but no one bought it.
Cuban said he bought the town to help a friend who needed to sell it. He also mentioned that he did not have any immediate plans for what to do with the property.
