Myfanwy Kitchin (born 1917, died 2002) was a talented British artist. She was well-known for her paintings. Later in her career, she also created beautiful sculptures made from clay, which are called ceramics.

Myfanwy Kitchin's Life Story

Early Life and Art Education

Myfanwy Kitchin was born in Newbury, Berkshire, England. Her family came from Wales. She loved art from a young age.

She started her art studies at the Hornsey School of Art in London. This was from 1935 to 1939.

Art and War Years

During World War II, Myfanwy continued her studies. She went to the Slade School of Fine Art part-time. At the same time, she trained to be a nurse. She worked at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford. In 1944, she won a special prize from the Slade School for her art.

After the war, she studied Fine Art at the University of Reading. Then, she became a teacher. She taught at Paignton College of Art until 1951.

Art Career and Other Jobs

Myfanwy Kitchin was a very busy artist. She also had several other important jobs. From 1960 to 1978, she worked as an art critic. She wrote about art for a big newspaper called The Guardian in the Midlands region.

She also drew pictures for books. She illustrated books for Phoenix House. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, she worked for Duckworth Publishers.

Subjects in Her Art

Myfanwy's paintings often showed everyday life. She painted industrial workers in the Midlands. These were people who worked in factories and mines. Later, she moved to the Welsh countryside near her home in Barmouth. There, she painted farmers and farm animals.

She used these same subjects for her ceramic sculptures. She would make sketches on-site. Then, she used a special method called "slab-pottery" to create her clay artworks. In the 1980s, she continued to learn. She studied part-time at the Walsall College of Art.

Exhibitions and Collections

Myfanwy Kitchin was a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art. This is a group of important artists. She often showed her art with the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists.

She also had many solo exhibitions. This means her art was shown by itself in galleries. These shows were in places like Birmingham, Lichfield, Walsall, and north Wales. You can see examples of her paintings and ceramics today. They are kept at the The New Art Gallery Walsall.
