About Mym Tuma
Early Life and Education
Mym Tuma was born in Berwyn, Illinois, in 1940. She loved art and went to several universities to study. She attended Northwestern University, Stanford University, and New York University. After finishing her studies, she set up her own art studio. She even had a studio in Lake Chapala, Mexico, where she started making art that was three-dimensional.
Her Artistic Journey
Mym Tuma met another very famous artist, Georgia O'Keeffe, in 1964. Over the next ten years, these two artists became good friends. They found they had many things in common, especially their love for each other's art. You can see this friendship in the many letters they wrote to each other.
Mym Tuma's artwork has been shown in many places. In 1987, her art was part of a special celebration for Georgia O'Keeffe at Columbia College. A famous art curator, Henry Geldzahler, also put together an exhibit of her pastel paintings. In 1992, Mym Tuma gave a talk at the Brooklyn Museum.
She is also a founding member of the National Museum of Women in the Arts. This museum helps celebrate the work of women artists. Mym Tuma continues to show her special sculptured paintings. She works from her studio on Long Island, New York. You can see examples of her art at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C.
What Inspires Her Art
Mym Tuma's art often shows shapes and patterns found in nature. She gets ideas from things like oval pebbles, round seeds, and spiraling seashells. Her paintings help us understand how living things grow and how nature creates order. She believes that saving energy helps create these beautiful patterns.
Mym Tuma has also written books about her art and ideas. In 2005, she wrote Radiant Energy, Light In My Pastel Paintings. She has also written poetry and essays about how she creates her art. Some of her other books include Awakening The Spirit and The Blue Planet Series. She also wrote about her friendship with Georgia O'Keeffe in O’Keeffe & Me: Abstracts of Our Letters.
Her unique way of making art, where shapes stand out in a three-dimensional way, is what she calls "sculptured painting." This style makes her an "organic minimalist" artist. This means her art is simple but inspired by natural forms.
Recent Exhibitions
Mym Tuma continues to share her artwork. She has shown her art at the Lauren G shop in Sag Harbor and the Full Moon Art Gallery in East Moriches. In 2005, she also had an exhibition at the Merchants Bank gallery in South Hero, Vermont. A special painting in this show was a calla lily in a dark blue space. This painting had stripes that reminded people of the twin towers and the blue light memorials.
