Mym Tuma (born 23 September 1940), also known as Marilynn Thuma, is an American painter and artist. She is known for her unique "sculptured paintings." These artworks combine painting with three-dimensional shapes.

About Mym Tuma

Mym Tuma was born in Berwyn, Illinois. She studied art at several well-known universities. These include Northwestern University, Stanford University, and New York University. After finishing her studies, she set up a studio in Lake Chapala, Mexico. There, she started creating three-dimensional art pieces.

Meeting Georgia O'Keeffe

In 1964, Mym Tuma met the famous artist Georgia O'Keeffe. Over the next ten years, they became good friends. They shared many interests, especially their love for each other's art. Their friendship is shown through the many letters they wrote to each other. Mym Tuma's art was even featured in an exhibit in 1987. This was part of a big celebration for Georgia O'Keeffe.

Her Art and Exhibitions

Mym Tuma has shown her art in many places. Her pastel paintings were once part of an exhibition chosen by Henry Geldzahler. He was a famous curator from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1992, she gave a lecture at the Brooklyn Museum.

Mym Tuma is also a founding member of the National Museum of Women in the Arts. This museum celebrates the work of women artists. Her special "sculptured paintings" are often displayed there. You can also see examples of her work at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC. Today, she works on the East End of Long Island, New York.

What Inspires Her Art?

Mym Tuma's art often shows shapes found in nature. She creates abstract works inspired by things like oval pebbles, round seeds, and spiraling shells. Her art helps us understand the basic structures of living things. It also shows how nature creates order by saving energy.

In 2005, Tuma wrote a book called Radiant Energy, Light In My Pastel Paintings. She has also written poetry and essays about her creative process. These include Awakening The Spirit and The Shell Theory of the Sculptured Paintings. She also wrote O’Keeffe & Me: Abstracts of Our Letters about her friendship with Georgia O'Keeffe.

Mym Tuma's focus on natural forms makes her an "organic minimalist" artist. Her work is special because she creates shaped forms that stand out in three dimensions. She calls these her "sculptured paintings." Her art is greatly influenced by things she sees near the ocean, like beach pebbles and sand. Recently, her art has been shown in shops and galleries in New York.

In 2005, Mym Tuma had an exhibition in Vermont. A painting of a calla lily was a main feature. This painting had dark blue stripes. These stripes reminded people of the Twin Towers and the blue light memorials after 9/11.
