Myra is a small, unincorporated community located in the town of Trenton. It is found in Washington County, Wisconsin, in the United States. Being "unincorporated" means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a city or town, but it's part of a larger local government area.
History of Myra
Myra was first planned out by two people, Chauncy Gray and Jacob E. Young. Jacob Young's wife chose the name "Myra" from her Bible. In its early days, Myra was a busy and active little village. Many of its first settlers were from Bohemia, a region in what is now the Czech Republic.
The Fishing Pond
Near Myra, there was once a pond that was a great spot for fishing and recreation. It was so full of fish that sometimes large pickerel (a type of fish) weighing up to twelve pounds would block the waterwheel! However, in 1913, a very strong rainstorm caused the dam holding the pond to break. The water drained into the Milwaukee River, and the dam was never rebuilt.
The Trenton House
The Trenton House was the second tavern (a type of inn or pub) built in Myra. Max Weinand built it in 1881. This building also served as a hotel, providing rooms for workers from nearby kilns (ovens for making bricks or pottery) and mills. Later, a man named Paul Hetebrueg bought the Trenton House and added a dance hall. Public dances were often held there. The dance hall was also rented out to the Myra Literary Society, a group that put on plays every spring.
