Exploring Trenton's Geography

The Milwaukee River flows right through the middle of Trenton. The north part of Cedar Creek also runs through the town. You can find Wallace Lake in the northwest corner, right on the edge of the Town of Barton.

According to the United States Census Bureau, Trenton covers about 33.5 square miles (86.7 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 33.4 square miles (86.5 square kilometers), is land. Only a small part, about 0.1 square miles (0.2 square kilometers), is water.

A Look Back at Trenton's History

Early Settlers and Farming Life

Long ago, in the 1830s, Potawatomi and Menominee Native American tribes lived along the Milwaukee River. In 1836, people who bought and sold land, like Solomon Juneau (who helped start Milwaukee), bought land in what would become Trenton. However, people didn't start settling there permanently until 1845.

Many of the first settlers were farmers from Germany. For a long time, dairy farming was the main way people made a living in Trenton. In the 1800s and early 1900s, the Wallau Dairy Company had a big cheese factory on the west side of town.

St. Augustine Catholic Church and Cemetery (Trenton, Wisconsin) September 2013 02
St. Augustine Catholic Church and Cemetery was started by people from Bavaria in 1856. Services were in German until the 1940s. This building is a historic landmark.

The Town of Trenton officially became a town on March 11, 1848.

Growth and New Communities

In 1848, a man named Barton Salisbury built a dam on the Milwaukee River. This dam helped power his mills, which ground feed and sawed wood. The area around his mills grew into the Village of Newburg, which became the biggest settlement in Trenton.

Around the same time, in 1848, a group of Free Will Baptists from New England settled near Wallace Lake. Their leader was Reverend Comfort Babcock Waller. They held special baptisms in the lake, even cutting holes in the ice during winter! This community later moved apart in the 1860s. Some members started a new church in nearby Boltonville in 1872.

In November 1862, during the American Civil War, some residents were not happy about the draft (being chosen to join the army). When men from Trenton were being drafted in West Bend, a crowd caused trouble. The person in charge of the draft had to leave and go to Milwaukee. To prevent more problems, the draft commissioner returned with soldiers on November 22, 1862.

Later in the 1800s, people from Bohemia settled in the community of Myra.

Modern Trenton

In the 1900s, Trenton became smaller as the nearby City of West Bend took over some of its land. This land was used for new homes, businesses, and the West Bend Municipal Airport. Also, Newburg officially became its own village in 1973, taking more land from Trenton.

Today, Trenton is known as a commuter town. This means that about half of the people who live there travel outside Washington County for their jobs.
