A Look at Newburg's History
Like many towns along the Milwaukee River, Newburg grew because of a mill powered by water. In 1848, a person named Barton Salisbury built a dam on the river. This dam helped power his mills, which processed feed and sawed wood.
Sadly, Salisbury died in an accident in 1849. However, one of his mills kept working until 1903. The other mill closed later, in 1939. The dam itself was repaired and replaced many times over the years. It was finally taken down between 2011 and 2012.
Newburg officially became a village in 1973. It was formed from parts of the towns of Saukville and Trenton. At that time, the village had a population of 634 people.
