The Kokee colicwood (scientific name: Myrsine knudsenii) is a special kind of tree that belongs to the primrose family. This tree is found only on the island of Kauai in Hawaii. This means it is endemic to Kauai, which means it naturally lives nowhere else in the world! Sadly, the Kokee colicwood is in danger because its natural home is being destroyed.
About the Kokee Colicwood
The Kokee colicwood can grow as a shrub or a small tree. It can reach a height of about 4.5 meters (which is about 15 feet tall). Its flowers grow in small groups along its branches.
Where it Lives
This unique tree grows in moist forests. It often shares its home with other trees like the Acacia koa and Metrosideros polymorpha, as well as a type of fern called Dicranopteris linearis. Scientists believe that long ago, the Kokee colicwood probably grew in many other kinds of ecosystems too.
Why it's Endangered
The Kokee colicwood is in serious trouble. There are only three groups of these trees left in the wild. All together, there are only about 30 Kokee colicwood trees remaining!
Because there are so few left, the United States government officially listed it as an endangered species in 2010. This means it is protected by law, and efforts are being made to save it from disappearing forever. The biggest threat to this tree is habitat loss, which means its forest home is being cleared or damaged.
