Máire Hendron's Political Journey
Máire Hendron has had an interesting career in politics, serving in different important roles. She started in local government and later moved to the Northern Ireland Assembly.
Starting in Local Politics
Máire Hendron first became involved in politics when she was elected to the Belfast City Council in 2005. She represented the area known as the Pottinger District. As a city councillor, she helped make decisions about local services and issues in Belfast.
She was re-elected to the Council in 2011. However, when the local areas were changed in 2014, she was not elected to the new Titanic District.
Serving Belfast as Deputy Lord Mayor
In 2014, Máire Hendron was chosen to be the Deputy Lord Mayor of Belfast. This is an important role in the city's government. The Deputy Lord Mayor helps the Lord Mayor represent Belfast and its people. She held this position for one year, until 2015.
Becoming a Member of the Assembly
In July 2019, Máire Hendron joined the Northern Ireland Assembly. This happened because the person who held the seat before her, Naomi Long, was elected to the European Parliament. When a politician leaves their role early, someone else can be "co-opted" to take their place. Máire Hendron served as an MLA for Belfast East until January 2020.
