Mònica López Moyano (born 10 January 1975) is a Spanish meteorologist and TV presenter. She is well-known for forecasting the weather on Televisión Española's Telediario 2. She also leads the weather team at RTVE, which is a big Spanish TV company. Since September 2020, she has also presented the TVE1 program La Hora de la 1.

About Mònica López

Her Education and Early Career

Mònica López studied Physics of the Earth and the Cosmos at the University of Barcelona. She finished her degree in 1997. Later, in 2016, she also earned a master's degree in political analysis. She also completed a special course in Corporate Communication and Branding.

After her physics studies, Mònica joined SAM. This was the first Spanish company focused on weather information. She started her TV career on a show called Teletiempo. Later, she worked on Canal Meteo.

Working in Television

Mònica López joined the TV3 weather team in Catalonia. From 2004 to 2008, she was a meteorologist for the morning show Els matins. She even helped count down to the New Year on TV3 in 2006–2007. Since 2005, she has also written about weather for a magazine called NAT.

On 1 July 2008, she started working for RTVE. She became the head of their weather department. She also began presenting the weather on TVE's Telediario 2. She took over from José Antonio Maldonado. Mònica has taken breaks twice for maternity leave. She returned to Telediario 2 in 2013 after a short time presenting the weather on Telediario 1.

Helping Weather Communication

In December 2012, Mònica López helped start the Association of Meteorology Communicators (ACOMET). She is also the president of its board. This group aims to make weather information better in Spain. As part of ACOMET, she helped update the Manual de Uso de Términos Meteorológicos. This is a guide for using weather terms correctly.

Mònica also worked with the Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (AEMET). They collaborated with the World Meteorological Organization. They created a video series called "El tiempo en 2050" (The Weather in 2050). This video shows what an area's weather might be like in 35 years.

Awards and Recognition

Mònica López has received special awards for her work:

  • In 2015, she received an Honorable Mention. This was at the European Meteorological Society TV Weather Forecast Award competition.
  • In 2016, she won an Ondas Award. This award was for being the best presenter. She was recognized for making weather information new and interesting. She helped viewers become curious about weather using different TV methods.
