Māris Štrombergs, born on March 10, 1987, is a famous BMX racer from Latvia. He used to race professionally. He made history at the 2008 Summer Olympics by becoming the very first Olympic champion in BMX cycling. That same year, he also won the UCI BMX World Championships. Four years later, at the London Olympics, he won another gold medal, keeping his Olympic title.
Štrombergs was born in Valmiera, a city in Latvia. His first coach was Raimonds Ciesnieks. He worked longest with another coach, Ivo Lakučs. Māris finished the Olympic BMX race in 2008 in about 36 seconds. In the 2012 Olympics, he completed the course in 37.576 seconds. When he came home from the 2012 Olympics, thousands of fans cheered for him in Valmiera.
On November 13, 2018, Māris Štrombergs announced that he was retiring from racing.

He didn't stop there. In 2012, he went to the London Olympics. He raced incredibly well again. He won another gold medal, defending his title. This made him the only BMX rider to win two Olympic gold medals.

Besides his Olympic success, Māris also won many other important races. He won the UCI BMX World Championships twice, in 2008 and 2010. He also earned a silver medal at the World Championships in 2011.

Life After Racing
