How Nói Síríus Grew
Nói Síríus has tried to grow its business in other countries.
- In the late 1990s, they bought part of Laima. Laima is Latvia's biggest candy maker. But Nói Síríus sold their share in 2004.
- In 2006, they bought an English chocolate company called Elizabeth Shaw. They sold this company in 2009. After that, Nói Síríus decided to focus more on their own well-known brands.
Orkla Takes Over Nói Síríus
A big Norwegian company, Orkla, slowly bought Nói Síríus.
- In August 2019, Orkla bought 20% of Nói Síríus. This was a smaller part of the company.
- In May 2021, Orkla bought the remaining 80% of the company. This made Orkla the full owner of Nói Síríus. The Icelandic Competition Authority approved this purchase.
Candy Culture in Iceland
Chocolate is a very important part of Icelandic culture.
- Nói Síríus makes about 300,000 chocolate Easter eggs each year. This is a lot, especially since Iceland has about 340,000 people!
- These Easter eggs are made at the company's factory in Reykjavík.
- A small note with a wise saying is put inside each Easter egg. This is a fun tradition.
- There are also Icelandic liqueurs that have the names Tópas and Opal. These drinks are inspired by the candies.
In 2007, the company did a special marketing stunt. People joined a Labor Day parade. They carried signs with the Tópas candy name. They even shouted advertising slogans.
