NEMA, sometimes called Tenth and Market, is a big apartment building in San Francisco, California. It has 754 apartments where people live. It's right across from the main office of Twitter! NEMA is made up of two tall towers, one with 24 floors and another with 37 floors. These towers are connected by a smaller, nine-story building.
How NEMA Was Built
The people who built NEMA bought the land in 2006. Back then, it was just an empty office building. The first plan was to build 719 apartments for sale. The land was cleared in 2007, ready for construction.
However, a big money problem happened in 2008. Because of this, the builders decided to change the plan. Instead of apartments for sale, they would build apartments for rent. But the land stayed empty for four more years.
In July 2009, the builders got permission to add more apartments, bringing the total to 754. Construction finally started on November 1, 2011.
The name "NEMA" stands for "New Market." The first people moved into the smaller south tower on October 1, 2013. The taller north tower opened for residents in March 2014. NEMA also helped support some cool art projects in 2015 and 2016.
Cool Design and How It Was Built
Handel Architects designed NEMA. The building has four parts that are linked together. These parts range from 10 to 37 stories high.
NEMA was designed to be very eco-friendly. It aimed to get a "LEED Silver Certification." LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. This means the building was built in a way that saves energy and protects the environment.
