Nā Mokulua, also called Mokulua, means "the two islands" in the Hawaiian language. These are two small islands, called islets, located off the eastern coast of Oahu in Hawaii. They are very popular for photos and are about 0.75 miles (1.2 km) from Lanikai, a neighborhood in Kailua.

The bigger island is named Moku Nui, which means "big island." The smaller one is Moku Iki, meaning "small island." Some Hawaiian experts believe these islands might have had other names long ago that are now forgotten.

A Home for Seabirds

The Nā Mokulua islands are part of the Hawaii State Seabird Sanctuary. This means they are a special protected area for birds. Many birds nest here in burrows (holes in the ground).

To keep the birds safe, there are rules for visitors:

  • The smaller island, Moku Iki, is completely off-limits. You cannot visit it.
  • On Moku Nui, you can only visit the beaches. The inner part of the island is protected.
  • No pets are allowed on either island.

How the Islands Formed

These islands were formed a very long time ago, between 2.7 and 3.9 million years ago. They are made of strong volcanic rocks called basaltic dikes. These dikes are part of a much larger ancient volcano called the Ko'olau shield.

Fun Activities and Important Rules

Many people enjoy visiting the Nā Mokulua islands.

  • Locals often surf the waves around Moku Nui.
  • Some people go spearfishing near the islands, where tiger sharks are sometimes seen in deeper waters.
  • Taking a kayak or outrigger canoe tour to the islands is a very popular activity.

It is important to know that there are rules about delivering kayaks or canoes to Kailua or Lanikai Beach. Always check local laws and guidelines before planning your trip to make sure you follow all safety and environmental rules.
