Nabalus asper (say "NAY-buh-lus AS-per"), also known as the rough rattlesnakeroot or rough white lettuce, is a cool plant found in the eastern United States. It's part of the Asteraceae family, which includes sunflowers and daisies! This plant grows back every year, so it's called a perennial. You can spot its blooms in late summer and autumn. In 2010, scientists gave it a new scientific name, moving it from the Prenanthes group to the Nabalus group.
Discovering Rough Rattlesnakeroot
This plant lives in many eastern United States states. You can find it from South Dakota and Pennsylvania. Its home stretches south to Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Alabama.
Where Rough Rattlesnakeroot Grows
Long ago, a person named Jason Hale collected this plant. He found it before 1843 in Louisiana. He probably found it near his home in Rapides Parish. That area was likely a prairie, which is a grassy field. Today, that specific prairie might not exist anymore. His plant sample is still the only one known from Louisiana.
