Nabarun Bhattacharya (born June 23, 1948 – died July 31, 2014) was an Indian writer. He wrote in the Bengali language. He was born in Berhampur, West Bengal, India.
Nabarun was the only child of two very famous people. His father was Bijon Bhattacharya, an actor and playwright. His mother was Mahasweta Devi, a well-known writer and activist. His family had many creative people. His grandfather, Manish Ghatak, was also a writer. His great-uncle was the famous filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak.
Nabarun Bhattacharya's novel, Herbert (published in 1993), won the important Sahitya Akademi Award. This book was later made into a movie in 2005. He also edited a literary magazine called Bhashabandhan.

Nabarun Bhattacharya studied in Kolkata. First, he studied Geology, which is the study of Earth's rocks and minerals. Later, he studied English at Calcutta University.
Nabarun married Pranati Bhattacharya. She was a professor who taught political science.
Nabarun's Creative Works
The Flying Fyataru Characters
Nabarun Bhattacharya created a very unique group of characters called the Fyataru. These characters are a bit strange and magical. They are like a group of rebellious people who enjoy causing trouble. The most amazing thing about them is that they can fly! They fly whenever they say a special chant: fyat fyat sh(n)aai sh(n)aai.
This special chant even became a song by a popular Bengali band called Chandrabindoo. The Fyataru characters appear in several of Nabarun's books. Some of these books include Mausoleum, Kaangaal Maalshaat, Fatarur Bombachaak, Fyatarur Kumbhipaak, and Mobloge Novel. One of his Fyataru stories, Kaangaal Maalshaat, was even turned into a movie.
The Novel Herbert
His novel Herbert is one of his most famous works. It was translated into English in 2019. This helped more people around the world read his stories. In 2020, a book was published that included Nabarun's short stories, poems, and interviews. It also had articles from critics about his writing.
Nabarun's Passing
Nabarun Bhattacharya passed away on July 31, 2014. He died from intestinal cancer in a hospital in Kolkata.
