Nabawa is a small town in the Mid West area of Western Australia. It is located in the Shire of Chapman Valley, about 42 kilometres (26 mi) northeast of the city of Geraldton. It's a quiet place with an interesting past.

History of Nabawa

How Nabawa Got Its Name

The name Nabawa comes from Nabawar Pool. This is a pool in the Chapman River. A surveyor first wrote about it in 1857. The name is an Aboriginal word. It means "camp far away." The way we spell Nabawa today has been used since 1872.

Early Developments and Growth

A Roman Catholic Assisted School opened in 1889. This helped educate children in the area. In 1910, a railway line was built. It was called the Upper Chapman Valley railway line. A train stop, or siding, was opened near the pool. This stop was named Nabawa.

Moving the Shire Headquarters

The railway closed down in 1961. But Nabawa continued to be important. In 1964, the Shire of Chapman Valley moved its main offices here. They moved from a town called Nanson. Because of this, Nabawa was officially declared a townsite in 1965.
