Early Life and Career
Nacha Guevara first trained to be a dancer and actress. By chance, she started a career as a singer. Around 1968, she became a symbol of the "avant-garde" movement. This was a new and experimental art movement. It happened at the Instituto Di Tella in Buenos Aires. This place was a leading center for new ideas in visual arts and theater.
Nacha was a popular figure in the underground art scene. She was known for her unique "café-concert" shows. In these shows, she sang songs and funny parodies. She performed works by famous writers and musicians. These included Boris Vian, Georges Brassens, and Tom Lehrer.

She chose her stage name, Nacha Guevara, in the mid-1960s. "Nacha" was a family tradition. "Guevara" was chosen for a "problem of identity." This was before Che Guevara became widely known.
Musical Success
In the early 1970s, Nacha created an important work. It was called Nacha sings Benedetti. For this, she worked with Alberto Favero. He was her musical partner and husband at the time. They turned famous poems by Uruguayan poet Mario Benedetti into songs.
In 1973, she gained huge success with a big show. It was named Las mil y una Nachas (meaning "One Thousand and One Nachas"). Both critics and audiences loved it.
Exile and Return
In 1974, Nacha Guevara had to leave Argentina. She was threatened by a group called the Triple A. This was a dangerous group. She first went to Peru and then to Mexico.
She tried to return to Argentina in 1975. She planned a new version of Las mil y una Nachas. But the show never opened. After the final rehearsal, a bomb exploded at the theater. A crew member was killed. This forced Nacha to leave the country again.
She continued her successful career abroad. She performed in Mexico, Cuba, and Spain. She also had shows in New York City, Chicago, and Havana. Later, she returned to Argentina.
After the end of the Argentine dictatorship, she came back home in 1984. In 1986, she starred in a musical called Eva, the great Argentinian musical. This show was Argentina's answer to the famous musical Evita. The show was later made even bigger in 2008.
