History of Nahcotta

Nahcotta was first settled in 1890. A person named J.A. Morehead started the community. He named it after Nahcati, who was a chief of the local Chinook tribe.

For many years, Nahcotta was an important stop for a special train. This train was part of the Ilwaco Railway and Navigation Company. It was a narrow-gauge railroad, which means its tracks were closer together than regular train tracks. The train ran from 1889 to 1930. It traveled from Ilwaco (and later from Megler) all the way up the Long Beach Peninsula to Nahcotta. It made the trip once every day.

The community also had a small post office. It opened in 1889 and was run by local people. This post office helped residents send and receive mail for many years. However, it closed on February 27, 2021.
