Nakhon Pathom (Thai: จังหวัดนครปฐม) is a province in central Thailand. It is known for being home to the Phra Pathommachedi. This is a very tall Buddhist monument.

Many people believe that Buddhism first arrived in Thailand in this area. The province is also famous for its many fruit orchards. Nakhon Pathom is located near Bangkok, Thailand's capital city.

Geography and Climate

Nakhon Pathom is a small province, about 56 kilometers (35 miles) from Bangkok. It sits on a flat plain in central Thailand. The Tha Chin River flows through the province. This river is a branch of the larger Chao Phraya River.

Many canals have been dug in Nakhon Pathom. These canals help with farming. Bangkok has grown so much that it now borders Nakhon Pathom.

Weather in Nakhon Pathom

Nakhon Pathom has a tropical savanna climate. This means it has dry, warm winters. Temperatures usually rise until May. The monsoon season runs from May to October. During this time, there is heavy rain. Days are a bit cooler, but nights stay warm.

History of Nakhon Pathom

The name Nakhon Pathom means 'first city' in the ancient Pali language. It is often called Thailand's oldest city. Long ago, Nakhon Pathom was a coastal city. It was on a trade route between China and India.

Over time, the coastline moved far away due to river sediment. The Tha Chin River also changed its path. This caused the city to lose its main water source. For hundreds of years, Nakhon Pathom was deserted. People moved to a nearby city called Nakhon Chai Si.

King Mongkut (Rama IV) later ordered the restoration of the Phra Pathom Chedi. It was crumbling and hidden in the jungle. A new city slowly grew around the restored monument. This brought new life back to Nakhon Pathom. A museum in the province shows the history of the city.

Many different groups of people have moved to Nakhon Pathom over the centuries. This includes Khmer, Lan Na, and Lao Song villages. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, many southern Chinese people also moved here. Today, people from all over Thailand come to Nakhon Pathom. Many Burmese workers also live here. The province now has factories, universities, and farms.

Economy and Farming

In 2019, there was a plan to build a new airport in Nakhon Pathom. This airport would help reduce traffic at Bangkok's two main airports. The project was planned to start in 2023 and open by 2026. It would handle 25 million passengers each year.

Nakhon Pathom is well-known for pig farming. Many of the original pig farmers were Thai-Chinese. The province is one of the top pig farming areas in Thailand. Farmers raise different types of pigs here. These include Landrace, Large White, and Duroc breeds.

Health Services

The main hospital in Nakhon Pathom is Nakhon Pathom Hospital. It is managed by the Ministry of Public Health.

Symbols of the Province

The official symbol of Nakhon Pathom is the Phra Pathommachedi. This pagoda is 127 meters tall. It is the tallest pagoda in the world. It stands in the center of Nakhon Pathom city. It has been an important Buddhist site since the 6th century. King Mongkut rebuilt the current structure in 1860. A royal crown on the pagoda represents King Mongkut's work.

The provincial flag is blue. It has the yellow provincial seal in the middle.

The provincial tree is the Diospyros decandra, known as "chan" in Thai. The provincial aquatic animal is the giant river prawn. It is called "kung mae-nam" or "kung kam-kram" in Thai.

The provincial slogan is: "sweet pomelos, delicious rice, beautiful young ladies."
