Nameless, Texas facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Nameless is a small community in Travis County, Texas, USA. A tiny part of it even reaches into Williamson County. This place is also known as Cross Creek or Fairview. Nameless is about 21 miles northwest of Austin and is part of the larger Austin-Round Rock area. It includes the Cherry Hollow Subdivision and a big part of Nameless Road, which goes into nearby Jonestown and Leander.

The Story Behind the Name

Have you ever wondered how a place gets a name like "Nameless"? It's quite a funny story! In 1880, the people living here wanted to set up a post office. Back then, it was common for towns to get official recognition by naming their post office.

Why Was the Town Called Nameless?

The first settlers in this area were mostly from Scotland and Ireland. When they tried to name their new community, they sent in several ideas to the post office. One of the names they suggested was Fairview. But the post office kept saying no! They said other towns already had those names. The people became very frustrated. Finally, they supposedly replied in anger, "Let the post office be nameless and be damned!" And just like that, the community of Nameless was born!

What Happened to Nameless?

Over time, the community of Nameless became part of the nearby city of Leander. The Nameless (Fairview) school, which was an important part of the community, closed its doors in 1945.

Today, not much is left of the original Nameless community. However, the old school building was restored between 2008 and 2009. This restored school and the Nameless Cemetery are the main reminders of this unique place with a very unusual name.
