History of Namiquipa
The area where Namiquipa is located was originally an indigenous village.
Early Settlements and Missions
Around 1662 or 1663, Franciscan missionaries arrived and set up a mission. They named it San Pedro de Alcántara de Namiquipa. However, this mission was later left empty.
Becoming a Town
Namiquipa was settled again and officially became a town, or villa, in 1778. The Spanish government, which ruled Mexico at the time, made Namiquipa and its surrounding area a military colony. This meant that people who settled there received land. In return, they had to help fight against the Apache people during the Apache Wars.
Namiquipa During the Mexican Revolution
Namiquipa played an important role during the Mexican Revolution, which lasted from 1910 to 1920. It was a strong base for Pancho Villa and his popular movement for a long time.
However, in 1916, the local people in Namiquipa changed sides. They formed their own local groups of fighters, called militias. These militias worked with the United States. In 1917, Pancho Villa and his men attacked Namiquipa and set the town on fire. One of Villa's commanders, Nicolas Fernandez, protected some of the townswomen. He ordered his soldiers to shoot anyone who tried to harm them. When news of this event spread, many villagers across Chihuahua stopped supporting Villa.
