A Look Back: The Nance Building's History
The Nance Building is one of the very few buildings left from the time before the American Civil War in Grainger County. This time is often called the Antebellum era.
Early Uses of the Building
When it was first built, the Nance Building was used for different businesses.
- It was a tavern, which is like an old-fashioned inn or restaurant.
- It was also a general store, where people could buy all sorts of things.
These uses continued until the late 1800s.
Changes Over Time
Later, the building became a mix of a private home and a restaurant. But in the 1970s, the building started to fall apart. This happened because its owner became ill. After the owner passed away in 1997, the City of Rutledge bought the building and the land around it. The city had plans to turn it into a historic center and a public park.
Becoming a Museum and Cultural Center
In 2018, the inside of the Nance Building was completely redone. This project turned the building into a history museum and a cultural center. Its main goal is to save and share the history of Grainger County for everyone to enjoy.
