Nando Reis, born José Fernando Gomes dos Reis on January 12, 1963, is a famous Brazilian musician and producer. He is well-known for being the former bassist and one of the lead singers of the Brazilian rock band Titãs. He also has a very successful solo career with his own band, Os Infernais.

Nando Reis has produced albums for other artists, including Cássia Eller and Marisa Monte. He worked closely with Cássia Eller on many songs. In 2012, Nando Reis was one of the top ten Brazilian artists who earned the most from music copyrights. By 2016, he was still among the top earners, especially for live performances and music played in public places.

Early Life and Music Beginnings

Nando Reis was born in São Paulo, Brazil. He has two older brothers, José Carlos and José Luiz, and two younger sisters, Maria Cecília and Maria Luiza. His mother was an acoustic guitar teacher, and his father was an engineer.

Nando's family helped him discover music. His brother José Carlos introduced him to Rock 'n' Roll bands like the Rolling Stones. His sister Maria Cecília taught him to play the acoustic guitar and took him to concerts.

Nando received his first acoustic guitar from his grandmother when he was seven. He learned his first chords from his sister. However, he mostly taught himself by learning songs from other artists like Caetano Veloso. He also took lessons from Paulinho Nogueira, who had also taught his mother.

Nando tried playing drums and electric guitar but found his passion in the bass guitar. He was inspired by bands like the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Alice Cooper. At age eleven, he took classical guitar and harmony lessons. His first songs were based on poems, and he liked to write long pieces of music.

In 1978, Nando formed a band called "Os Camarões" (The Shrimps) with friends at school. They even won a local music festival. There, he met Paulo Miklos and Arnaldo Antunes, who would later become his bandmates in Titãs. After high school, Nando tried studying mathematics at university but decided to leave to focus on his music. He was also a percussionist and singer in a salsa band called Sossega Leão.

Joining the Band Titãs

In 1982, the band Titãs, then called "Titãs do Iê-Iê," had their first live show. Nando Reis initially played the drums but soon switched to bass guitar. The band recorded many songs and sent them to music labels until they signed with Warner Music.

In 1984, Titãs released their first album, also called Titãs. Nando played bass on some songs, even though he was first meant to be a backing vocalist. He briefly left the band for two weeks to focus on his salsa band, but he soon returned to Titãs. In the late 1980s, Titãs traveled to London for their first international concert. Sadly, Nando's mother passed away in 1989.

In the early 1990s, Nando started producing albums for other artists like Marisa Monte and Cássia Eller. In 1995, he released his first solo album, 12 de Janeiro. In 2000, Titãs recorded an album in Seattle, and Nando released his second solo album, Para Quando o Arco-Íris Encontrar o Pote de Ouro. This album featured special guests like Cássia Eller and Peter Buck from REM.

In 2001, Nando was nominated for a "Best solo new artist" award but did not win.

Leaving Titãs and Solo Success

In 2001, Titãs' guitarist Marcelo Fromer passed away. Later that year, Nando also lost his friend Cássia Eller. These losses deeply affected him. In 2002, he released his third solo album, Infernal. On September 9, 2002, Nando decided to leave Titãs. He wanted to focus more on his solo music and felt his ideas for songs were becoming more independent from the band's style. Today, Nando Reis and the members of Titãs are still good friends.

In 2001, Nando produced and performed on Cássia Eller's Acústico MTV album. This album later won a Latin Grammy Award for Best Brazilian Rock Album in 2002.

Nando Reis's Solo Career

In 2003, Nando Reis released his fourth album, A Letra A. He then released a very popular live album with his band Os Infernais, called MTV Ao Vivo. In 2006, he released another studio album, Sim e Não, followed by another live album, Lual MTV.

His next album, Drês, released in 2009, included personal songs. "Conta" was a tribute to his mother, and "Só Pra So" was for his daughter Sophia. The song "Pra Você" was a duet with Ana Cañas. His cover of "Eu Nasci Há Dez Mil Anos Atrás" was featured in a popular Brazilian TV show.

In 2011, a song he co-wrote called "De Repente" won a Latin Grammy Award for Best Brazilian Song.

Nando Reis spent much of 2012 in Seattle recording his seventh solo album, Sei, which came out in October. He worked with producer Jack Endino, who had also produced albums for Titãs.

On October 6, 2012, Nando performed live with Titãs again for the first time since he left the band. This special show in São Paulo celebrated Titãs' 30th anniversary. Other former members, Arnaldo Antunes and Charles Gavin, also joined. It was the first time Nando played his bass guitar with the band since 2002.

Nando performed at the Rock in Rio festival in 2013 with Samuel Rosa from the band Skank. In 2014, Nando Reis was nominated for his third Latin Grammy Award for his live album Sei Como Foi em BH.

In 2016, Nando released his album Jardim-Pomar. The album cover was designed by artist Vânia Mignone. The first song from the album, "Só Posso Dizer," was released in September 2016.

In October 2018, he released the song "Rock 'n' Roll," which was almost nine minutes long and featured Jack Endino on guitar. In September 2020, he released "Espera a Primavera" (Wait for Spring), featuring other artists like Lulu Santos and his son Theo. The song talks about a "multi-color love," which Nando said was against negative ideas in the government.

In 2021, Nando Reis's EP Duda Beat & Nando Reis and his song "Espera a Primavera" were nominated for Latin Grammy Awards. Also in 2021, he re-recorded two of his older hits: "Um Tiro no Coração" with Pitty and "Não Vou Me Adaptar" with Arnaldo Antunes. These songs were released before his "Nando Hits" tour, which started in December 2021.

In 2022, Nando Reis released an album with the Orquestra Petrobras Sinfônica, following a tour they did together in 2019.

Personal Life

Nando Reis has four children with his first wife, Vânia Passos: Theodoro, Sophia, Sebastião, and Zoe. His daughter Sophia Reis has worked as a VJ for MTV Brasil and as an actress. His son Theodoro Reis is also a musician.

Nando Reis is a big fan of the São Paulo FC football team. He even wrote a book about his love for football called Meu Pequeno São-Paulino (My Little São Paulo Supporter). He also used to write a sports column for a newspaper.

Nando has a property in Jaú, São Paulo state, where he works to restore the natural forest and keeps bees.
