Early Life and Musical Beginnings
Nando Reis was born in São Paulo, Brazil. He has two older brothers, José Carlos and José Luiz (who is deaf). He also has two sisters, Maria Cecília and Maria Luiza, who had cerebral palsy.
His mother taught acoustic guitar, and his father was an engineer. His older brother, José Carlos, introduced him to rock music, like The Rolling Stones. His sister Maria Cecília taught him to play acoustic guitar. She also took him to concerts by Gal Costa and Gilberto Gil.
Nando's grandmother gave him his first acoustic guitar when he was seven. His sister taught him his first chords. But he mostly learned to play by himself, practicing songs by Caetano Veloso. He also took lessons from Paulinho Nogueira, who taught his mother too.
Nando was inspired by a rock band his brother's friends played in. He tried drums and electric guitar, but found his true calling with the bass guitar. Artists like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Alice Cooper also influenced his music. At age eleven, he took classical guitar lessons. His first songs were based on poems and were often quite long.
In 1978, Nando formed a band called "Os Camarões" (The Shrimps) with friends. They won a local music festival. There, he met Paulo Miklos and Arnaldo Antunes. They started writing songs together, which would later become part of the band Titãs. After high school, Nando tried university but decided to leave to focus on his music. He also played percussion and sang in a salsa band called Sossega Leão.
Time with the Band Titãs
In 1982, Titãs (then called "Titãs do Iê-Iê") played their first live show. Nando Reis was the drummer at first, but he soon switched to bass guitar. The band recorded many demo tapes and eventually signed with Warner Music.
In 1984, Titãs released their first album, Titãs. Nando played bass on some songs, even though he was initially supposed to be a backing vocalist. He briefly left the band for two weeks to focus on his salsa band, but he soon returned to Titãs. In the late 1980s, Titãs performed their first international show in London. Sadly, Nando's mother passed away in 1989.
In the early 1990s, Nando started producing albums for other artists like Marisa Monte and Cássia Eller. In 1995, he released his first solo album, 12 de Janeiro. In 2000, Titãs recorded As Dez Mais in Seattle. Nando then released his second solo album, Para Quando o Arco-Íris Encontrar o Pote de Ouro. This album featured special guests like Cássia Eller and Peter Buck from REM.
In 2001, Nando was nominated for a "Best Solo New Artist" award but did not win.
Tragically, in 2001, Titãs' guitarist Marcelo Fromer died in an accident. Later that year, Nando lost another close friend, Cássia Eller. These losses deeply affected him. In 2002, he released his third solo album, Infernal. On September 9, 2002, Nando decided to leave Titãs. He wanted to focus more on his solo music. He also felt his ideas for songs were becoming more different from the band's. Today, Nando Reis and Titãs are on good terms.
In 2001, Nando produced and performed on Cássia Eller's Acústico MTV album. This album later won a Latin Grammy Award in 2002.
Solo Music Career
In 2003, Nando Reis released his fourth album, A Letra A. He then released a successful live album with his band Os Infernais, called MTV Ao Vivo. In 2006, he released another studio album, Sim e Não, followed by another live album, Lual MTV.
His next album, Drês, included personal songs. "Conta" was a tribute to his mother, and "Só Pra So" was for his daughter Sophia. He also sang a duet with Ana Cañas called "Pra Você". His cover of "Eu Nasci Há Dez Mil Anos Atrás" was featured in a Brazilian TV show.
In 2011, a song he co-wrote with Samuel Rosa from the band Skank, called "De Repente", won a Latin Grammy Award for Best Brazilian Song.
Nando spent much of 2012 in Seattle recording his seventh solo album, Sei. He worked with producer Jack Endino, who had also produced albums for Titãs.
On October 6, 2012, Nando performed live with his former band Titãs for the first time since he left. This special show in São Paulo celebrated the band's 30th anniversary. Other former members, Arnaldo Antunes and Charles Gavin, also joined. It was the first time Nando played his bass guitar with Titãs since 2002.
Nando performed at Rock in Rio in 2013 with Samuel Rosa. In 2014, Nando Reis received his third Latin Grammy Award nomination for his live album Sei Como Foi em BH. He also announced plans for a new album in 2015.
In 2016, it was revealed that his new album would feature guest performances from his former Titãs bandmates Paulo Miklos, Branco Mello, Sérgio Britto, and Arnaldo Antunes. Other singers like Pitty, Luiza Possi, and Tulipa Ruiz also joined. Even Peter Buck (from R.E.M.) and Mike McCready (Pearl Jam) were featured. Four of Nando's children (Zoé, Sophia, Theo, and Sebastião) also appeared on the album.
In 2016, Nando Reis joined a tour called Nivea Viva! with bands like Os Paralamas do Sucesso and singers Paula Toller and Pitty. This tour honored Brazilian rock music. Later that year, it was announced that Nando would sing on some songs by the American supergroup Levee Walkers.
In November 2016, he released his album Jardim-Pomar. The album cover was designed by Vânia Mignone. The first song from the album, "Só Posso Dizer", was released in September 2016.
In October 2018, he released the song "Rock 'n' Roll". This long song, almost nine minutes, featured Jack Endino on guitar. In September 2020, he released "Espera a Primavera" (Wait for Spring). This song featured Endino, Lulu Santos, and his son Theo. The song talks about "multi-color love," which Nando says is against negative ideas.
In 2021, his EP Duda Beat & Nando Reis (with Duda Beat) and his song "Espera a Primavera" were nominated for Latin Grammy Awards.
Also in 2021, Nando Reis re-recorded two of his popular songs. In June, he released a new version of "Um Tiro no Coração" with Pitty. In November, he released "Não Vou Me Adaptar," originally by Titãs, with Arnaldo Antunes. These songs were released before his "Nando Hits" tour began in December in São Paulo.
Family Life
Nando Reis has been married twice. His first marriage was to Vânia Passos in 1985. They have four children: Theodoro, Sophia, Sebastião, and Zoe. In 2003, he and Vânia separated. He later married Anna, but that marriage ended in 2005. He then dated Nina, and they had a son named Ismael. Some years later, he started dating Vânia again. He also dated fellow musician Marisa Monte.
His daughter Sophia Reis was a VJ for MTV Brasil and has acted in a film. His son Theodoro Reis is also a musician in the band Zafenate.
Nando Reis is a fan of São Paulo FC football club. He even wrote a book about his love for football called Meu Pequeno São-Paulino (My Little São Paulo Supporter). He also wrote a sports column for a newspaper.
Nando's cousin is Vange Leonel, who was known for her work with the band Nau. Nando produced Vange's first solo album in 1991.
Nando Reis owns land in Jaú, São Paulo, where he works to restore the forest and keeps bees.
