Nanjemoy Creek is a creek in Charles County, Maryland, in the United States. It is about 13.1 miles (21.1 km) long. This creek flows into the Potomac River. It is located between two areas called Cedar Point Neck and Tayloe Neck.

The land area that drains water into Nanjemoy Creek is called its watershed. This watershed covers about 73 square miles (190 km2) of land. In 1994, about 2% of this land was covered by things like roads and buildings. These are called impervious surfaces because water cannot soak into them.

Protecting Nature at Nanjemoy Creek

The Nature Conservancy is an organization that works to protect important natural areas. In 1978, they created the Nanjemoy Creek Preserve. This preserve helps protect over 3,510 acres (1,420 ha) of land in the creek's watershed.

Nanjemoy Creek is also home to a very large group of great blue herons. These large birds build their nests close together in what is called a rookery.

Blossom Point: A Special Area

On Cedar Point Neck, there is an area called Blossom Point. This area used to be a testing site for the U.S. Army. Because of its past use, there might be old, unused military items in the ground or water. These items are called unexploded ordnance (UXO). It is very important to never touch or disturb any unusual objects you might find in this area.

The Nanjemoy Community

The rural community of Nanjemoy is located in the area around Nanjemoy Creek. It is a quiet place connected to the natural beauty of the creek.
