Naomi Davis Shelton (born Naomi Virginia Davis; October 14, 1942 – February 17, 2021) was an American singer. She was known for her powerful voice in gospel, blues, funk, and soul music. Naomi started her music journey in 1958, right after finishing high school. She became the lead singer of a group called The Gospel Queens from Brooklyn. Later, they became known as Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens.
Growing Up and Early Life
Naomi Virginia Davis was born on October 14, 1942. Her hometown was Midway, Alabama. She had two older sisters, Hattie Mae and Annie Ruth. Naomi grew up in the church, attending Mount Coney Baptist Church with her parents. They often sang together as a family.
After graduating from high school in 1958, Naomi moved away. She first went to Florida. Then, in 1963, she settled in Brooklyn, New York. To support herself, she worked cleaning houses during the day. At night, she would sing at a place called the Night Cap. Naomi was married to Dennis Shelton.
Naomi's Music Career
Naomi Shelton began her professional singing career in 1958. This was right after she finished high school. She almost got a record deal in 2002 with a company called Desco Records. However, that company closed down before she could release music with them.
Eventually, Naomi signed a contract with Daptone Records. There, she became the main singer for The Gospel Queens. Together, they released two albums. Naomi also appeared as herself in a movie called Song One in 2014.
