The Narcissus nevadensis is a special type of daffodil. It belongs to the Narcissus genus, which includes all daffodils. This plant is part of the Amaryllidaceae family.
This unique daffodil grows naturally in the Baetic System mountains in Spain. Sadly, it is an endangered species. This means there are very few of these plants left in the wild.
Protecting the Nevada Daffodil
Because it is so rare, the Narcissus nevadensis needs special protection. In 1992, the European Union decided it was a 'priority species'. This was done under something called the Habitats Directive.
What is a Priority Species?
Being a 'priority species' means the European Union wants to protect this plant very much. It helps make sure the plant doesn't disappear forever.
Special Areas for Conservation
When a plant is a priority species, the places where it grows can become protected areas. These are called Special Areas of Conservation. This helps keep the plant's natural home safe. It also helps other plants and animals that live there.
