Nasopharyngeal carcinoma facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Nasopharynx cancer or nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a type of cancer that starts in the nasopharynx. The nasopharynx is the upper part of your throat, behind your nose. It's like a small box at the back of your nasal cavity. This cancer is more common in certain parts of the world, especially in East Asia and Africa. It can affect both children and adults.

What is the Nasopharynx?

The nasopharynx is a small but important part of your body. It is located just above the soft part of the roof of your mouth. Air passes through your nose and then through the nasopharynx to reach your lungs. This area also connects to your ears through tubes called Eustachian tubes.

What Causes Nasopharynx Cancer?

Scientists believe several things can increase the chance of someone getting nasopharynx cancer. These include:

  • Viruses: A virus called the Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) is often linked to this cancer. Many people get EBV, but only a few develop NPC.
  • Diet: Eating certain foods, especially those preserved with salt, might play a role.
  • Genetics: Your genes, which you inherit from your parents, can also make you more likely to get it.
  • Gender: This cancer is more common in males than in females.

How Does Nasopharynx Cancer Start?

NPC usually starts in the flat cells that line the nasopharynx. These are called squamous epithelial cells.

  • Cancer cells are cells that grow out of control. They don't act like normal cells.
  • Sometimes, these cancer cells are called undifferentiated. This means they don't look or act much like normal, healthy cells. They haven't fully developed their mature features or functions.
