Natá is a historic town located in the Coclé Province of Panama. It sits right along the famous Pan-American Highway, which connects many countries in the Americas. Natá is the main town, or seat, of the Natá District.

As of 2010, about 6,003 people lived in Natá. It's a smaller community, with the larger city of Penonomé nearby. Another town, Aguadulce, is only about 10 kilometers away. Even though it's a small town, Natá has important places like a primary school, a high school, a bank, a post office, and a pharmacy.

A Glimpse into Natá's Past

Natá is a very old town with a rich history. It was founded by the Spanish on May 20, 1522. This makes it the third oldest town in Panama that is still around today! Only Nombre de Dios and Panama City were founded earlier. Natá is also the second oldest town founded by Europeans on the Pacific coast, right after Panama City.

Why is it Called Natá de Los Caballeros?

The full name of this historic town is Natá de Los Caballeros. The name "Natá" comes from a local leader, or cacique, named Anata. The part "Los Caballeros" means "The Knights." This was added because 100 Spanish knights were stationed in the city a long time ago.

The Oldest Church in Tierra Firme

Natá is home to a very special church. Many believe it is the oldest church still standing in Tierra Firme. Tierra Firme was the name for the mainland parts of the Spanish Empire in Central and South America. This church was likely built when the Spanish first arrived in Central America, conquering the Native Indian tribes. It is thought to be from the 16th century.

Today, the church is in great shape thanks to the care of the people of Natá and frequent repairs. For example, its roof was recently fixed using Nispero wood. This wood is very strong and resists insects. The church is still used every day by residents for Catholic mass and for town festivals.

Natá's Growing Population

The number of people living in Natá has slowly grown over the years. In 1990, the population was 5,158. By 2000, it had increased to 5,902. As of 2010, the population reached 6,003 people.
