Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Natalie Savage Carlson (born October 3, 1906 – died September 23, 1997) was an American writer who wrote many popular children's books. She was so good at writing for kids that in 1966, she was chosen to represent the United States for the special international Hans Christian Andersen Award. This award is given out every two years to amazing children's authors.

Natalie was born in Kernstown, Virginia. Her family had French Canadian roots, and she loved to use their old family stories and folktales in her early books. For example, her book The Talking Cat and Other Stories of French Canada (published in 1952) is full of these tales. Natalie started writing very young; she published her first story when she was just eight years old in the children's section of Baltimore Sunday Sun newspaper.

One of her most famous books, The Family Under the Bridge, was a runner-up for the 1959 Newbery Medal. This is a really important award given by librarians each year to the best American book for children.
