Natasha Flyer facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Natasha Flyer (born in 1969) is an American scientist. She is an expert in two fields: Earth science and applied mathematics. Earth science is the study of our planet, including its atmosphere and oceans. Applied mathematics uses math to solve real-world problems. Natasha is especially known for her work with something called radial basis functions.

She works as a research scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). This center studies the Earth's atmosphere. She also works with the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Her Journey in Science

Natasha started her science journey at Northwestern University. She studied geological sciences there and earned her first degree in 1993.

After that, she went to the University of Michigan. She studied atmospheric and space science. In 1999, she earned her Ph.D., which is a very advanced degree. Her big research project was about how features high in the atmosphere affect certain types of waves.

From 1999 to 2000, Natasha worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the National Center for Atmospheric Research. This means she continued her research after getting her Ph.D. She then received a special fellowship from the National Science Foundation. This allowed her to continue her research at the University of Colorado at Boulder from 2000 to 2003. In 2003, she returned to the National Center for Atmospheric Research as a permanent scientist.

Her Book

Natasha Flyer wrote a book about radial basis functions. These are special mathematical tools used to solve problems in science and engineering. The book is called A Primer on Radial Basis Functions with Applications to the Geosciences. She wrote it with her husband, Bengt Fornberg. The book was published in 2015.
