A Look at Nathalie's History
Nathalie got its name around 1890 or 1891. It was named after Natalie Otey, whose mother, Mrs. Rebecca Wimbish, owned a lot of land in the area. Before this, the village was part of the Nathaniel Barksdale plantation.
The community has a long history. A church, the first Catawba Baptist Church, was built there in 1773. A post office has been operating in Nathalie since 1828. This post office is still open today and uses the ZIP code 24577.
A notable landmark near Nathalie is the former Clarkton Bridge. This bridge crosses the Roanoke or "Staunton" River, about 4 miles northeast of the community. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006 because of its historical importance.
