The Nathan A. Woodworth House is a special old house located at 28 Channing Street in New London, Connecticut. It was built a long time ago, in 1890. This house is a great example of a building style called Queen Anne and Shingle style.
It's so important that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 1, 1982. This means it's officially recognized as a historic building. It's also part of a larger area called the Post Hill Historic District, which has many old and interesting buildings.
What Does the House Look Like?
The Nathan A. Woodworth House stands in a neighborhood with other homes, just west of downtown New London. It looks out over Williams Park from Channing Street.
This house is two and a half stories tall and made of wood. It has a unique shape with many different parts sticking out. The roof also has a busy, interesting design, which is common for Queen Anne style homes.
You can see different types of windows and roof gables. The chimneys have cool, decorative tops. There's also a front porch with fancy turned posts and a railing. Inside, the house has beautiful wooden details and fireplaces with decorative tiles. The main staircase even has a special gas light built into its newel post (the main post at the bottom of the stairs).
Who Lived in the House?
The house was built in 1890 for a man named Nathan Woodworth. He worked in the paper milling business in a nearby town called Waterford, Connecticut.
The design of the house might have come from a special book of architectural plans. Nathan's father bought the land for the house in 1865. Then, in 1890, he sold it to Nathan's wife.
Building this house helped make the Williams Park area known as a nice place for important families to live. The builders were the Bishop Brothers. They were one of the most famous construction companies in New London at that time.
