Nathaniel Edward Kindersley (born February 2, 1763 – died February 16, 1831) was an English officer. He worked for the British East India Company, a powerful trading company. He is famous for being the first person to translate parts of a very old and wise book called the Tirukkural into English in 1794.

His Family Life

On July 3, 1786, Nathaniel married Hannah Butterworth. They got married in Tangernaikpuram, Tamil Nadu, India. They had two sons together. Their sons were named Sir Richard Torin Kindersley and Nathaniel William Kindersley.

Nathaniel Kindersley passed away on February 16, 1831. He was 68 years old when he died in Little Marlow, Buckinghamshire, England.

His Important Work

Nathaniel Edward Kindersley made history with his writing. He published the very first English translation of the Tirukkural. This happened in 1794.

Translating the Tirukkural

His translation was part of a larger book he wrote. The book was called Specimens of Hindoo Literature. The chapter with the translation was titled 'Extracts from the Teroo-Vaulaver Kuddul, or, The Ocean of Wisdom'. He translated only the first few chapters of Book I of the Kural text. He wrote his translation in a simple, direct style called prose.
