Nathaniel Ryder, 1st Baron Harrowby (born July 3, 1735 – died June 20, 1803), was an important British politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is like a main part of the British Parliament, from 1756 to 1776. After that, he was given a special title and became Baron Harrowby.

Ryder was the son of Sir Dudley Ryder, who was a very important judge called the Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench. Nathaniel went to Clare College, Cambridge University in 1753 to study.

Becoming a Baron

On May 20, 1776, Nathaniel Ryder received a special honor. He was made a Baron, which is a noble title, and became known as Baron Harrowby. This title was linked to a place called Harrowby in Lincolnshire. Later, he also worked as a Deputy Lieutenant for the areas of Staffordshire and Lincolnshire. This role involved helping the King's representative in those counties.

Marriage and Children

Lord Harrowby married Elizabeth Terrick in 1762. Elizabeth was the daughter of Richard Terrick, who was the Bishop of London, a very important church leader.

Nathaniel and Elizabeth had several children. Their second son, Richard Ryder, also became a successful politician. He even served as the Home Secretary from 1809 to 1812. The Home Secretary is a top government minister in charge of things like law and order.

Their youngest son, Henry Ryder, chose a different path. He became a church leader, serving as the Bishop of Gloucester and later the Bishop of Lichfield.

End of Life and Successors

Lord Harrowby passed away in June 1803 when he was 67 years old. His eldest son, Dudley, took over his title as Baron. Dudley was also a very important politician. He served as the Foreign Secretary, which means he was in charge of Britain's relationships with other countries. In 1809, Dudley was given an even higher noble title and became the Earl of Harrowby.

Nathaniel Ryder is remembered at St Wulframs Church in Grantham. Lady Harrowby, his wife, passed away the following year in 1804.

The family's main home was Harrowby Hall, a large house located in Lincolnshire.
