National Alliance (Latvia) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The National Alliance (often called NA) is a political party in Latvia. Its full name in Latvian is Nacionālā apvienība „Visu Latvijai!” or „Tēvzemei un Brīvībai/LNNK”. This party works to represent the people of Latvia in their government.

How the National Alliance Started

The National Alliance party was formed on July 23, 2011. It was created when two other parties joined together. These were the "All For Latvia!" party and the "For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK" party.

Since it was created, the party has gained more and more support. In the most recent election for Latvia's parliament, called the Saeima, they did very well. They received 151,567 votes from people across the country. This helped them win 17 out of 100 seats in the Saeima.

The party also took part in the 2014 European election. In that election, they received 63,229 votes. This allowed them to win 1 out of 8 seats that Latvia has in the European Parliament.

What the National Alliance Believes

The National Alliance party is based on two main ideas: nationalism and conservatism.

  • Nationalism means they strongly support their own country, Latvia. They want to protect its culture, language, and independence.
  • Conservatism means they often prefer traditional ways of doing things. They believe in keeping things stable and respecting older values.

The party is also considered Eurosceptic. This means they are careful about the European Union (EU). They sometimes disagree with how the EU works. They might want Latvia to have more control over its own laws.

Another important belief of the party is about Russia. The National Alliance wants the Latvian government to have a very firm stance against Russia. They believe Latvia should be strong and independent from its large neighbor.
