National Archives of Japan facts for kids
The National Archives of Japan, also known as NAJ, is a special place in Japan. It's like a super important library that keeps all the official papers and old records from the Japanese government. Its main job is to save these documents so people can learn from them for many years to come.
History of the Archives
For a long time, Japan didn't have one main place to keep all its important government papers. So, a law was passed in 1999 to create the National Archives of Japan. This law made it clear that the NAJ's main job is to save all kinds of government documents and historical records.
What is an Independent Institution?
On April 1, 2001, the National Archives became an "Independent Administrative Institution." This means it's a public organization that works a bit like a separate company, but it's still part of the government's bigger plan. This helps it focus on its important job of preserving history.
Since 2005, the NAJ has made many of its records available online. You can even see high-quality pictures of some of its most important items, including those considered "Important Cultural Properties of Japan." These are very special historical treasures!
