The National Clothespin Factory is a special old building in Montpelier, Vermont. It was built in 1918 and is a great example of an early 20th-century factory made of wood. For many years, it was home to the very last company in the United States that made wooden clothespins. Today, the building is used for other things. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005 because of its important history.
The Clothespin Factory's Story
What Does the Factory Look Like?
The old National Clothespin Factory is in an industrial area of Montpelier. It sits between the railroad tracks and the Winooski River. The main building has three stories and a flat roof. It is made of wood.
The building is quite wide, with many windows. There are three doors on the side that faces Granite Street. A small tower stands at one corner. There are also some smaller parts added to the building. A small office building is located closer to the river.
A History of Clothespins
The National Clothespin Company started in 1887. It was one of two companies in Montpelier that made clothespins. The company first operated at a different location. This factory building was built for them in 1918.
The National Clothespin Company made clothespins here until 2003. At one time, there were up to fifteen clothespin factories in the United States. This factory was the very last one to close down. The industry faced challenges from cheaper clothespins made in other countries. Also, more people started using electric clothes dryers.
This building is one of Vermont's best-preserved wooden factories from the early 1900s. It still has some original features. For example, it has an old elevator. This elevator was made by the Energy Elevator Company in Philadelphia.
