Historic Places in Briscoe County
Lake Theo Folsom Site Complex
The Lake Theo Folsom Site Complex is a very important archaeological site. It's located inside Caprock Canyons State Park, near the town of Quitaque.
This site helps us learn about ancient people who lived here a very long time ago, around 10,000 years ago! These early Americans are known as the Folsom people. They were skilled hunters.
At Lake Theo, archaeologists found evidence of a huge bison hunt. The Folsom people used clever ways to hunt large groups of bison. This site helps scientists understand how these ancient people lived and survived. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 28, 1975.
Mayfield Dugout
The Mayfield Dugout is another fascinating historic site in Briscoe County. It's located about 7 miles northwest of Silverton.
A "dugout" is a very simple type of home. Pioneers, who were early settlers moving into new areas, often built dugouts. They would dig into the side of a hill or the ground to create a shelter. This was a quick and easy way to build a home when there weren't many trees or building materials around.
The Mayfield Dugout gives us a peek into what life was like for families settling in Texas many years ago. It shows us how resourceful and tough these pioneers had to be. This site was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 18, 1973.
