The SW-9 Boundary Stone

This stone is located near 18th and Van Buren Streets. It was placed here on May 11, 1976. This isn't just any old rock! It's one of the original boundary stones that marked the corners of the District of Columbia when it was first created. These stones were set up by a team that included Benjamin Banneker, a famous African American astronomer and surveyor. This particular stone is so important that it's a National Historic Landmark.
