Welcome to New Orleans, Louisiana! Did you know that many buildings and places here are super old and important? They are listed on something called the National Register of Historic Places. This is like a special list kept by the United States government to honor places that have played a big part in American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering, or culture.

Orleans Parish is the same area as the city of New Orleans. It's a "consolidated city-county," which means the city and county governments are combined. There are 186 places in Orleans Parish on this special list! Twenty-five of these are even more important and are called National Historic Landmarks. This means they are recognized as being important to the entire country, not just the state. A few places were once on the list but have since been removed.

  • This 1909 Art Nouveau style courthouse and former post office was where many important civil rights cases were heard in the mid-1900s.

• U.S. Customhouse

  • This Egyptian Revival style federal building now houses the Audubon Insectarium. It took a long time to build (1848-1881) because of design changes and the Civil War.

• U.S. Mint, New Orleans Branch
  • Address: 420 Esplanade Avenue

  • Built in 1835, this was a branch of the U.S. Mint and even briefly a Confederate mint. It's now one of the Louisiana State Museum's properties in the French Quarter.

• Union Bethel A.M.E. Church

  • This is a historic church.

• Upper Central Business District
  • Address: Roughly bounded by O'Keefe, Poydras, Convention Center Boulevard, the Expressway (U.S. Route 90 Business), and Howard Avenue

  • This is another large historic district in the downtown area.

• Uptown New Orleans Historic District
  • Address: Roughly bounded by Louisiana, Claiborne, Lowerline, and the Mississippi River

  • This is a large, historic neighborhood known as Uptown.

• Vieux Carre Historic District (French Quarter)
  • Address: Bounded by the Mississippi River, Rampart and Canal Streets, and Esplanade Avenue

  • This is the original city of New Orleans, designed by French colonial officials in the early 1700s. It's the most famous historic area in the city!

• Walker House

• Whitney National Bank (Poydras Branch)

  • This was a branch of the Whitney National Bank.

• Xavier University Main Building, Convent and Library

  • This building is part of Xavier University, a historically black Catholic university.

Places That Used to Be Listed

Sometimes, places are removed from the National Register. This can happen if they are destroyed, moved, or changed so much that they no longer have their historic value.

• New Canal Lighthouse
  • Address: West End Boulevard and Lakeshore Drive
  • Listed: December 30, 1985
  • Delisted: July 13, 2011
  • This lighthouse, built in 1890/1901, was badly damaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. Luckily, it has since been rebuilt!

• Canal Station

  • Listed: February 4, 1993
  • Delisted: March 31, 2015
  • This building was a streetcar and bus barn and repair facility.

• USS CABOT (CVL-28)
  • Address: Foot of Jackson Street
  • Listed: June 21, 1990
  • Delisted: July 8, 2001
  • This was an aircraft carrier that was later scrapped, meaning it was taken apart and no longer exists.
