Nativity is a beautiful painting created by the famous Spanish artist El Greco between 1603 and 1605. It shows the Nativity of Jesus, which is the birth of Jesus Christ. This artwork was one of five paintings made for a large altar in the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Caridad, a church in Illescas, Toledo, Spain.
Four of these paintings, including Nativity, can still be seen in the church today. The others are called Charity, Coronation of the Virgin, and Annunciation. The fifth painting, Marriage of the Virgin, is now in the National Museum of Art of Romania.
What is the Nativity Painting About?
This painting is a simpler version of another artwork by El Greco called Adoration of the Shepherds. That painting was part of the Doña María de Aragón Altarpiece. In Nativity, El Greco chose to leave out the shepherds. He also made the scene fit into a round shape, which is different from his other works.
