The Virgin of Charity (in Spanish, La Virgen de la Caridad) is a famous painting created by the artist El Greco. He painted it between 1597 and 1603. This artwork was one of five paintings El Greco was asked to create for a special altar in the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Caridad. This church is located in the Spanish town of Illescas, Toledo.
El Greco's son, Jorge Manuel Theotocópuli, helped him get this important job. The painting is still displayed in the Santuario today. Three other paintings from this same project are also in the church: Coronation of the Virgin, Nativity, and Annunciation. The fifth painting, Marriage of the Virgin, is now in the National Museum of Art of Romania.
About the Painting: The Virgin of Charity
This painting shows a new way of presenting an old idea. It updates the traditional way the Virgin of Mercy was shown in art from the Middle Ages. In this painting, the central figure is the Virgin Mary. She opens her large cloak wide, as if to offer shelter and protection.
Who is in the Painting?
Under the Virgin's cloak, you can see a group of people. They are wearing fancy collars called "ruffs," which were very popular during that time. These people include El Greco's own son and other important members of the noble families from Toledo. The painting shows the Virgin Mary caring for and protecting these individuals.
