Nebo, Ohio facts for kids

Nebo is a ghost town located in Defiance County, in the U.S. state of Ohio. It was once a small community found south of Mark Center. A ghost town is a place where most people have left, and very few, if any, still live there.

The Story of Nebo

Nebo was started by a man named George Spealman. He was a veteran from the Civil War, which means he fought in that big war in America. George Spealman opened a general store in Nebo, which was like a main shop where people could buy many different things. He also ran the town's post office.

What Was in Nebo?

Besides the general store and post office, Nebo had other important places. There was a saw mill, which was used to cut wood into planks. There was also a cider mill, where apples were pressed to make cider. And, importantly, Nebo had a school for the children living there.

Why Did Nebo Disappear?

The post office in Nebo was opened in 1890. It stayed open for about 14 years, closing down in 1904. When a town's post office closes, it often means fewer people are living there or using its services. Over time, as people moved away, Nebo became a ghost town.
