History of Necedah
The name "Necedah" has a special meaning. It comes from the Ho-Chunk people, who lived in this area long before European settlers arrived. "Necedah" means "Land of the Yellow Waters." This name refers to the Yellow River, which flows nearby.
The Necedah Shrine Event
On August 15, 1950, a large gathering took place near Necedah. About 80,000 people came to a farm. A woman named Mrs. Van Hoof had reported seeing a vision of the Virgin Mary there. Life magazine reported on this event in its September 11, 1950, issue.

The Town of Necedah covers a total area of about 82.9 square miles (214.6 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 78.3 square miles (202.8 square kilometers), is land. The remaining 4.6 square miles (11.8 square kilometers) is water, making up about 5.5% of the town's total area.

In 2000, the town had 2,156 residents. There were 776 households, and 584 of these were families. The population density was about 27.5 people per square mile. The average household had 2.74 people, and the average family had 3.19 people.
