Sprague: A Small Community in Wisconsin

Where is Sprague?

Sprague is easy to find if you're traveling in Wisconsin. It sits right on Wisconsin Highway 80. A railway line, used by the Canadian National Railway, also passes through the area. Sprague is about 8.5 miles (13.7 kilometers) north-northwest of the village of Necedah.

How Did Sprague Get Its Name?

The community of Sprague likely got its name from two brothers, John and Gleason Sprague. They were important people in the late 1800s. The brothers owned and published a newspaper called the Mauston Star. It was a local newspaper in the nearby town of Mauston.

Early History: The Post Office

A post office was opened in Sprague in February 1907. This was an important step for the community. It meant people could send and receive mail right in their own area. The first person in charge of the post office, known as the postmaster, was Michael Anthony.
