Exploring Sioux City's Neighborhoods

North Side

  • The North Side is a big residential area. It's north of 18th Street, near North High School. You can find the historic John Peirce house here. It's a beautiful old Victorian home built in 1890. It's made from special pink stone called Sioux Falls rose quartzite.
  • The Near North Side is just north of downtown. It stretches from 7th to 14th Street. The impressive Cathedral of the Epiphany is here. It has two tall spires! Bishop Heelan Catholic High School is also nearby. The old "Castle on the Hill," which was Central High School, is in this area too.
  • Indian Hills starts around 27th and Cheyenne Boulevard. It goes north to North Outer Drive. Homes here were built between the 1960s and 1980s.
  • Country Club is bordered by Hamilton Boulevard. It extends up the Perry Creek valley. This area has traditional mansions and large ranch-style houses.
  • Leeds is mostly a residential neighborhood. It's northeast of downtown, near 41st Street. Streets in Leeds are named after American presidents.
  • Rose Hill is known for its large, century-old houses. It's roughly bordered by 12th Street and Grandview Park. This area has many unique places. You can find ethnic restaurants, coffee shops, and small art galleries here.
  • Gilman Terrace is along the 19th Street road. This road cuts through a bluff. It used to have a popular park with a sports field. Today, it has a strip mall and Memorial Field.
  • The Heights is between Grandview Park and Hamilton Boulevard. It includes East and West Solway. This area has large estates built from the 1890s to the 1940s. You can see Prairie School, Victorian, and Georgian style homes here.

East Side

  • Kelly Park is a residential area. It's centered around the park of the same name. It's east of Highway 75. It spans several blocks from East 7th to East 18th Street.
  • Springdale is a smaller neighborhood. It's along 28th Street on the east side of Sioux City. It's close to the Floyd River.
  • Greenville is a neighborhood along the Bacon Creek valley. It also includes homes and businesses near the original Floyd River channel. The historic Floyd Cemetery is located here.
  • Morningside is a large, hilly area in southeast Sioux City. It was first a streetcar suburb in the late 1800s. Edwin Peters helped develop this area. He lived near its first commercial center, "Peters Park." Morningside College, founded in 1894, is also in Peters Park. Today, Morningside is a big area with many different neighborhoods. It has a mix of older homes and shopping areas.
  • Polack Hill is a Morningside neighborhood. It's on one of the city's highest bluffs. It's near Pulaski Park. Historic St. Casimir's Church, built by Lithuanian immigrants in 1915, was once here.
  • Cecelia Park is a small area in west-central Morningside. It has a municipal park and a busy commercial area. It's about 1.5 miles north of Peters Park.
  • Southern Hills is the newest residential area in Morningside. It's also the main shopping district for the city.

  • Riverside is a flat, residential area. It's on the west side of Sioux City. It's along the Big Sioux River. This area is important because it was where Theophile Bruguier, the first white settler, had his farm.
  • Smith-Villa is a neighborhood on the upper west side. Smith Elementary School has been here since 1899. A new school, Liberty Elementary School, opened in 2011.
  • Prospect Hill is one of the city's oldest neighborhoods. It's on the lower west side, close to downtown. A monument is at the top of the hill. It offers great views of the city, South Sioux City, Nebraska, and the Missouri River.
  • Woodbury Heights is a newer development. It's in the hills on the western side of Sioux City. Fieldcrest Drive is the main entrance to this neighborhood.

Former neighborhoods

  • The South Bottoms was a working-class neighborhood. It was west of the stockyards. This area was later removed to build Interstate 29 and change the Floyd River's path. A memorial was created in 1997 to honor the families who lived here.

Shopping and Fun in Sioux City

  • Downtown is the main business district. It goes from the Riverfront up to about 8th Street. Many interesting buildings are here. The Woodbury County Courthouse is one example. It's a National Historic Landmark. It was designed in the Prairie School style.
  • The Orpheum Theater is also downtown. It was built in 1927. It was renovated in 2001. Now, it hosts Broadway shows and concerts. The Tyson Events Center is near the riverfront. It's a big place for events and sports. It's home to the Sioux City Musketeers, a hockey team.

Historic Fourth Street
  • Historic Fourth Street is an area east of downtown. It's becoming popular again. It has many old commercial buildings. Many were designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style. This area was very important from the 1880s to the early 1900s. It had grand buildings like the Peavey Grand Opera House.
