Nellie Blythe Nicholson Taylor (born July 22, 1888 – died December 20, 1965) was an important African-American woman. She was a suffragist, meaning she worked hard for women's right to vote. She was also a dedicated educator.
Nellie Nicholson was a leader in many community groups. She helped start the Women's College Club of Delaware. She was also a founding member of the Zeta Omega chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. This is a group for African-American college women.
In 1914, she helped create the Equal Suffrage Study Club. This group worked to get voting rights for Black women. They marched in Wilmington's first suffrage parade that same year. After the Nineteenth Amendment passed, giving women the right to vote, her group helped Black women register. They also helped start a Wilmington chapter of the NAACP in 1915. Nellie Nicholson was their first press relations staffer.
Early Life and Education
Nellie Nicholson was born in Baltimore, Maryland on July 22, 1888. Her parents were George W. and Charlotte Nicholson. Her father served in the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War. Her mother was a skilled seamstress.
Nellie went to Baltimore Colored Training School for high school. She then attended Pembroke College in Brown University. She earned a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in 1911. After teaching for some years, she continued her studies. She went to the University of Pennsylvania and earned a master's degree in Mathematics Education in 1931.
Family Life
Nellie Nicholson married William H. Taylor in 1928. He was a widower with three children. Nellie Nicholson Taylor is buried in Eden Cemetery in Collingdale, Pennsylvania.
