Neoregnellia is a special group, or genus, of flowering plants. It belongs to the Malvaceae family, which also includes plants like cotton and hibiscus! This genus is quite unique because it only has one known species: Neoregnellia cubensis.
This plant is native to the beautiful Caribbean region. You can find it growing in places like the Cayman Islands, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti.
What's in a Name?
The name Neoregnellia was chosen to honor Anders Fredrik Regnell. He was a Swedish doctor and botanist who lived a long time ago, from 1807 to 1884.
The second part of the plant's name, cubensis, tells us something important about where it was found. In Latin, "cubensis" means "coming from Cuba". This makes sense because Cuba is one of the places where this plant naturally grows!
Scientists first officially described and named both the genus Neoregnellia and the species Neoregnellia cubensis in 1924. They published their findings in a scientific paper called "Repertorium Specierum Novarum Regni Vegetabilis."
