Nereus is a kind and wise sea god in Greek mythology. People often called him the "Old Man of the Sea." He was known for his knowledge and for being able to change his shape. Nereus was one of the oldest gods of the sea.

Who is Nereus?

Nereus was a very important sea god. His parents were Gaia, who was the goddess of the Earth, and Pontos, who was the god of the sea itself. This means he came from the very first gods. He lived deep in the Mediterranean Sea.

His Family

Nereus married an Okeanid named Doris. Okeanids were sea nymphs, or spirits, who were daughters of the great Titan god Oceanus. Nereus and Doris had many daughters, usually said to be fifty of them. These daughters were called the Nereids.

The Nereids were beautiful sea nymphs. They were known for their beauty and their helpfulness. Some famous Nereids include Thetis, who was the mother of the hero Achilles, and Galatea. The Nereids often helped sailors and heroes.

What Nereus Was Like

Nereus was known for being very wise and truthful. He always told the truth and could see into the future. Because of this, many heroes and gods would seek him out for advice. He was also famous for his ability to change his shape into many different forms. He could become fire, water, or even a fierce animal. This made him hard to catch if someone wanted to force him to tell a secret.

Nereus in Stories

Nereus appears in several ancient Greek stories. He often helps heroes who are on difficult journeys.

Heracles and Nereus

One famous story involves the hero Heracles. Heracles needed to find the Garden of the Hesperides as part of his twelve labors. He knew that Nereus could tell him where it was. Heracles had to wrestle with Nereus and hold onto him tightly. Nereus kept changing his shape into different creatures and elements, trying to escape. But Heracles held on until Nereus finally gave up and told him the way to the garden. This shows Nereus's wisdom and his power to change forms.

Nereus and the Nereids

Nereus and his daughters, the Nereids, were generally seen as friendly gods. They were protectors of sailors and fishermen. They would often appear to help those in trouble at sea. They represented the calm and gentle side of the ocean, unlike some other more powerful and sometimes dangerous sea gods.
